(HOWARD, SD) – Horizon Health Foundation has recently welcomed Gary McKellips, a lifelong resident of Alcester, South Dakota, to the Foundation’s board of directors, which is comprised of seven leaders representing the Horizon Health Care, Inc. service area. The board members guide the direction of the Foundation and oversee operations including financial management and advocacy efforts.
McKellips is a graduate of University of South Dakota, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. After graduation, he returned home to work in the State Bank of Alcester, which had been a family-owned bank since 1919. McKellips was named the Chief Executive Officer in 1990 and recently retired in 2017.
In addition to his career in banking, McKellips has had a passion for economic development and expansion of the Alcester community. He has served as an officer and on boards of many community organizations, including the Alcester Development Company, Inc., Morningside Care Center, Inc., Alcester Downtown Limited Partnership, Alcester Community Foundation, and Alcester Lions Club.
McKellips has also been involved with the Alcester Industrial Park’s efforts to purchase farmland surrounding town for future and residential growth. Most recently, he worked with local organizations to purchase a site overlooking the football field and golf course for a new community center facility.
Outside of his commitment to his hometown, McKellips has also served on the Independent Community Bankers of South Dakota board and as a trustee for the University of South Dakota Foundation.
“We are thrilled to have Mr. McKellips join our Board of Directors,” said Tracy Pardy, Horizon Health Foundation Executive Director. “Gary has a wealth of knowledge and experience with nonprofits. His extensive background in the banking industry will be beneficial as the Foundation continues to grow and connect with individuals, businesses, and corporations that want to invest in our mission. His involvement will aid in making a difference in our communities and the patients we serve.”
The Horizon Health Foundation was established in 2016 to ensure rural health care access to those in need and provide funding for Horizon Health Care, Inc. Horizon Health Foundation, a tax-exempt, non-profit corporation, seeks through responsible activities to encourage and derive sustaining gift support from current and former patients and interested friends, including corporate entities. The Horizon Health Foundation, operating in coordination with Horizon Health Care, Inc., is the duly designated fundraising arm for Horizon Health Care. In the broadest sense, the purpose of the Foundation is to create an awareness of the financial needs of Horizon Health Care, which are not provided by patient charges and to systematically implement plans by which dollar needs can be met.
